MeiMei Welker, DVM
Dr. Welker came to Powell Veterinary Center after working since 2006 as a staff veterinarian at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital. Her last three years were spent in the community outreach position. That time brought MeiMei a deep respect and appreciation for the human-animal bond and the profound and unique role animals play in our lives. Dr. Welker says she hopes to utilize this experience and knowledge as much as possible so that people can make informed decisions in the care of their animal companions throughout the stages of their lives. In MeiMei’s spare time, she enjoys: running with her two dogs, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and camping with her human twin children. Dr. Welker’s interests and specialized skills include: emergency/critical care, wellness care, dentistry, feline medicine, soft tissue surgery, and senior wellness care.
Melissa Flora, DVM
Dr. Melissa Flora was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. She moved to Portland in 1998 to attend Lewis and Clark College and fell in love with the city. After receiving her B.A. in English and History, Dr. Flora spent time traveling and discovered her true passion, working with animals, while helping out on a farm in New Zealand. Dr. Flora returned to Oregon in 2004 and started working in the veterinary field. She received her veterinary degree from Oregon State University. Dr. Flora has special interests in dentistry, end of life care and management of chronic disease. She is experienced in integrative medicine and feels comfortable discussing a wide variety of supplemental therapies.
As a third generation Alaskan, Dr. Flora feels most at home out in the woods. When not at work, you will find her rock climbing, backpacking, cross-country skiing, canoeing, or just trail running in Forest Park. She volunteers with PAW Team caring for the pets of the homeless and those in extreme poverty. Dr. Flora currently resides in Northeast Portland with her cat Blue, and her dog, Chip. Dr. Flora believes all pets are members of a family, and that we must consider the entire family and the pet’s role in any decision we make.
Emily Schoenrock, DVM
Dr. Emily grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, but was lucky enough to have a parent in the San Juan Islands where she learned to enjoy sailing and the beautiful PNW. Although she grew up with both human and veterinary doctors in her family, she always knew she wanted to be a vet. ☺ During her training years she enjoyed working with marine mammals in California, and wildlife in the Midwest.
Emily earned her Bachelor’s degrees at the University of California, Berkeley and California State University, East Bay before attending vet school at the University of Illinois. After vet school she completed a year-long Small Animal Medicine Internship at Iowa State University. She has published research on post-operative pain management, and has contributed to research on thoracic trauma, asepsis, microsurgery techniques, neuro mapping, and the application of myocardial stem cells in regenerative medicine
She says she is most passionate about surgery, diagnostic imaging, and supporting aging pets
When she is not working she enjoys playing squash, loves swimming, and getting outdoors as much as possible. She also enjoys living in Portland with her two blind cats, who continue to surprise her about how little their disability affect them, and an old beagle, who lives for food. ☺
While living in Lake Tahoe, she observed that if she had to be anything other than a veterinarian, (skill level aside), she would want to be a professional snowboarder! We are glad you chose to be a Veterinarian instead! Welcome to the team Dr. Emily!

She also enjoys pet sitting, cooking and meal prepping, and hanging out with loved ones. She unfortunately does not have any pets of her own (yet!), so she thoroughly enjoys taking care of animals in a variety of different settings. She looks forward to meeting you and your pets!
